Mary Anne Schimmelpenninck (1806–1856)
1778–1856
Author. First child of Samuel Galton (1753–1832) and his wife, Lucy Barclay, Quakers. Married Lambert Schimmelpenninck in 1806. Baptised Methodist, 1808; joined the Moravians, 1818. Works included The theory and classification of beauty and deformity (1815) and Narrative of the demolition of the monastery of Port Royal des Champs (1816). Criticised the character of Erasmus Darwin (1731–1802), whom she knew when she was a child, in her posthumously published autobiography.
