Writer on finance. Merchant in the Baltic timber trade, 1810–30. A director of the Bank of England, 1821–72. A founder member of the Political Economy Club, 1821. Public works commissioner, 1831–76. A director of the Sun Insurance Office, 1830–64. Succeeded to his father’s estate at the Rookery, Bromley Common, Kent, in 1830. A family friend of the Darwins.
