Edward Newton
1832–97
Ornithologist and colonial official. Held a succession of appointments in the colonial service, including colonial secretary of Mauritius, 1868–78, and lieutenant-governor of Jamaica, 1878–83. Co-authored papers with his elder brother, Alfred Newton. Knighted, 1887.
