Scottish-born politician. MD, University of Edinburgh, 1834. Travelled to New Zealand, 1841–2, and became active in provincial and national politics. Speaker of the House of Representatives, 1861–70. Founding member, Nelson Horticultural Society. Contributed specimens to Joseph Dalton Hooker’s Handbook of the New Zealand flora (1864–7). Knighted, 1866.
