John Michels

English-born American microscopist and journalist. Probably born in London in 1835. Auctioneer, 1861. Married Jane Branson, daughter of William Branson, stonemason, at St Marylebone, Middlesex, in 1867. Member of the Quekett Microscopical Club, 1870. Emigrated to the United States in 1871; became an American citizen in 1886. Founder of Science; editor, 1880–2. Member of the American Society of Microscopists, 1891–4. Chief microscopist, Bureau of Animal Industry, Chicago, by 1891.
