Anatomist and surgeon. Demonstrator of anatomy, University College London, circa 1845; professor of surgery, 1866; later, Holme Professor of clinical surgery. Consulting surgeon to University College Hospital, 1884. Professor of anatomy, Royal Academy of Arts, 1873–91. Pioneered operations to excise varicose veins. Instrumental in the discovery that cholera is a water-borne disease. FRS 1857.
