James Bateman

1812–97

Industrialist, banker, landowner, and horticulturist. Developed Biddulph Grange in north Staffordshire and established a well-known garden there from 1840. Cultivated tropical plants, especially orchids. Acquired orchids in Central and South America, and published important works on the Orchidaceae. President of the North Staffordshire Field Club, 1865–70. FRS 1838.
