Charles Greely Loring

1828–1902

American soldier, traveller, and curator. Graduated from Harvard, 1848; AM degree, 1851. Joined Louis Agassiz’s Lake Superior expedition, and attended Harvard Scientific School. Travelled in Europe and the Middle East with his father for several years. Achieved the rank of major-general of volunteers in the Civil War. Visited Egypt and studied Egyptology. Installed the Way collection of Egyptian antiquities in Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; became trustee, and then curator in 1876.
