German naturalist and philosopher. Professor of zoology, botany, and chemistry, University of Rostock, 1792–1811; professor of chemistry and botany, University of Breslau, 1811–15. Professor of botany and director of the botanic garden at the University of Berlin, 1815. Interested in the philosophical foundations of the natural sciences. Foreign member, Royal Society of London, 1842.
