Surgeon, physician, medical reformer, anatomist, botanist, and popular author and lecturer. Founder and editor of the Journal of Social Science, 1865–74. Secretary for the biological section of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, 1839–64; of the Ray Society from 1844. President of the Microscopical Society of London, 1859. FRS 1845.
