Jean Baptiste Pierre Antoine de Monet (Jean) (Baptiste) de Lamarck
1744–1829
French naturalist. Held various botanical positions at the Jardin du roi, 1788–93. Appointed professor of zoology, Muséum d’histoire naturelle, 1793. Believed in spontaneous generation and the progressive development of animal types; propounded a theory of transmutation.
