American surgeon. Ran the Philadelphia School of Anatomy, 1866–75. Lecturer in pathological anatomy, Jefferson Medical College, 1866–75; professor of surgery, 1889–1907. Professor of artistic anatomy, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, 1876–89. Professor of surgery, Women’s Medical College, 1884–9. A renowned brain surgeon. Specialised in the surgical treatment of nervous disorders such as epilepsy.
