Geologist with the Geological Survey of Great Britain working in North Wales and the English Midlands, 1846–50. Local director of the Geological Survey of Ireland, 1850–67; director, 1867–9. Lecturer on geology at the Royal College of Science, Dublin, from 1854. President of the Geological Society of Dublin, 1853–4. FRS 1853.
