Charles Richardson Johnson

1815–82

Naval officer. Born in Cape Colony. Acting mate on HMS Beagle, 1836. Lieutenant on HMS Princess Charlotte in the Mediterranean, 1840–1. Served off the coast of England, 1842–7. Commander on HMS Driver in the Pacific, 1848–52. Captain, 1856; rear-admiral, 1875; vice-admiral, 1879. Retired in 1864.
