Franz Martin (Franz) Hilgendorf


German zoologist, palaeontologist, and museologist. Studied philology in Berlin, 1859–62. Received a doctorate from Tübingen for palaeontology, 1863. Assistant, zoological museum, Berlin, 1860–2, 1863–7. In 1865, spent several months doing further palaeontological research at Steinheim. Director, zoological garden and aquarium, Hamburg, 1868–70. Docent, Imperial Medical Academy, Tokyo, 1872–6. Returned to the zoological museum, Berlin, 1876; keeper, 1880.
