Assistant professor of physics, Chaptal college, 1856; professor of physics and mechanics, Turgot school, 1860. Inspector of primary schools, Paris, 1872; Seine department, 1882. Inspector of scientific education in primary schools, 1887; inspector-general for primary education, 1888. A founder of the Society for the Promotion of Female Education and promoter of education for the deaf and blind.
