Socialist. BSc, University College, London, 1870. Assistant to the physiologist Michael Foster in Cambridge. Teacher of elementary physics and botany, North London Collegiate School for Girls, 1872–6. Lecturer in comparative anatomy, London Hospital, 1876–81. In 1879, made a public pronouncement that he had been an atheist for two or three years. Wrote, lectured, and taught for the National Secular Society; vice-president, 1880–4. Wrote several articles and pamphlets on Darwinism. Lived with Karl Marx’s daughter, Eleanor, from 1884; with her, founded the Socialist League.
