Theodor Gomperz


Austrian classical philologist and philosopher. Studied philosophy at Brünn (Brno), 1847–9, and Vienna, 1850–3, but did not receive a doctorate. Worked as an independent scholar until 1867. Habilitated Vienna, 1867; professor extraordinarius of classical philology, 1869; professor, 1873–1900. Supervised the translation into German of the works of John Stuart Mill. Wrote a major work on the history of Greek philosophy
