Henry Gillman
1833–1915
Irish-born American naturalist. Emigrated to the United States, settling in Detroit, Michigan, in 1850. Assistant, US Geodetic Survey of the Great Lakes. Led topographic and hydrographic expeditions, 1851–69. Assistant superintendent of construction, tenth and eleventh lighthouse districts, Northern Lakes, 1870–6. Librarian, Detroit Public Library, 1880–5. US consul to Jerusalem, 1886. Wrote on indigenous grave-mounds of the United States.
