Patrick Geddes


Scottish botanist, sociologist, and urban planner. Studied at the Royal School of Mines with T. H. Huxley, who subsequently employed him as a demonstrator. Interested in applying the lessons of evolutionary science to human society; worked on urban renewal and the preservation of historic buildings in Edinburgh. Published The evolution of sex (1889), with his student, J. Arthur Thomson. Professor of botany, University College, Dundee, 1889; University of Bombay, 1919. Knighted, 1932.
