Robert David Fitzgerald
1830–92
Irish-born surveyor and naturalist in Australia. Studied civil engineering at Queen’s College, Cork. Emigrated to Sydney, Australia, in 1856. Draftsman to the Department of Lands, 1856; in charge of the roads branch, 1868; deputy surveyor-general, 1873. Chief mining surveyor, 1874–82. Made botanical collections on Lord Howe Island. Published Australian orchids in parts from 1875. Fellow of the Linnean Society, 1874.
