William George Fargo
1818–81
Expressman. In 1844, became messenger for Wells & Company, of which he was one of three owners. Secretary of the American Express Company in 1850. Wells, Fargo & Company established the first express to and from California in 1852. President of the American Merchants Union Express Company, 1868. Mayor of Buffalo, New York, 1862–6.
