Missionary. Joined the London Missionary Society in 1814. Ordained as an independent (Congregational) minister, 1815. Went to the Society Islands (French Polynesia) in 1816. Became a skilled linguist and wrote on Polynesian life and natural history. In the Hawaiian Islands, 1822–5. In Madagascar from 1852.
