Anton Heinrich (Anton) de Bary
1831–88
German botanist and physician. Studied medicine in Heidelberg, Marburg, and Berlin, 1849–53. Professor extraordinarius of botany, Freiburg im Breisgau, 1855; professor, 1859. Professor of botany, Halle, 1868; Straßburg (Strasbourg), 1872. Discovered lichen symbiosis and the sexuality of fungi.
