Lion hunter. Cornet in the Madras cavalry, 1838–40. Hunter in the interior of South Africa, 1843–8. Published an account of his experiences and became known as the "Lion Hunter". Set up a museum displaying his hunting trophies at Fort Augustus on the Caledonian Canal in 1858.
