Dear Darwin

I return you a proof of the Fossil-Descriptions corrected.1 As D’Orbigny gave the names, had not “E. Forbes” better be left out after each species—the general heading sufficing—whilst Sowerby’s name would remain attached to his descriptions2 —they to be placed within inverted commas.

As I have been absent from town for the last 4 days, working my


‘Descriptions of Secondary fossil shells from South America’, appendix, South America, pp. 265–8. Eleven species are described.
George Brettingham Sowerby described sixty-one Tertiary fossil shells in his part of the appendix, and two of the Secondary fossil shells in Forbes’s.


Returns corrected proof of his descriptions of S. American fossil shells [South America, appendix].
