The date is conjectured from the fact that a second edition of Variation was planned in February 1875 (see letter from John Murray, 17 February [1875]. In September 1873, John Murray, CD’s publisher, had twenty-six copies left of the first edition (Correspondence vol. 21, letter from John Murray, 25 September [1873]), and by February 1875, copies were evidently not available to buy (letter to John Murray, 16 February [1875].
