Darwin Correspondence Project

To ?   [1874–5?]1

Dear Sir

Although I read with great interest & formed a high opinion of the value of one of your papers, I shd. consider it so unauthorised a piece of presumption on my part to express any opinion whatever on the merits of a candidate in chemistry, that I am sorry to say I cannot accede to your desire.

Pray excuse me & believe me Dear Sir | Yours—— | C. Darwin

Footnotes

The date is conjectured from the location in the archive of the original, between a run of drafts from 1875 and a run from 1874. The correspondent has not been identified.

Summary

Although he formed a high opinion of one of the correspondent’s papers, regrets that he could not presume to give an opinion of the merits of a candidate in chemistry.
