Aug. 29. ’73

My dear Sir

My eyes got wrong in Egypt (it was the opthalmic season) & I thought it best to come back: they are all right now, however—1 I read with great pleasure the other day Mr. G. Darwin’s article on marriage.2 Hoping that the warm weather has been favourable to you | I remain | Yours very truly | Winwood Reade

Footnotes

Eye diseases were prevalent during the summer months (May to October) in Egypt. Reade had left for Egypt at the end of June (see letter from W. W. Reade, 26 June 1873).
Reade refers to George Howard Darwin’s article ‘On beneficial restrictions to liberty of marriage’, which appeared in the August issue of the Contemporary Review (G. Darwin 1873b).

Summary

Has returned from Egypt because of trouble with his eyes.

Has read George Darwin’s article on consanguineous marriage.
