To E. W. Lane   23 June 1873

Down, | Beckenham, Kent.

June 23. ’73

My dear Dr. Lane,

I am very much obliged for the present of your little book,1 which I will read as soon as I have finished another in hand. I never forget how much I owe to Hydropathy, although the last time I tried it, it seemed to do me harm. The days which I spent at Moor Park have left a most pleasant recollection on my mind.2 I hope you & all your family are well, & I beg you to give my kind & grateful remembrances to Lady Drysdale & Mrs. Lane.3

Believe me | My dear Dr. Lane | Yours sincerely 〈13 page excised

P.S | My wife desires me to add her very kind remembrances to you all.

Old medicine and new (E. W. Lane 1873).
CD had attended water spas periodically between 1849 and 1864 (see Browne 1990). He stayed at Lane’s hydropathic establishment at Moor Park in Farnham, Surrey, on numerous occasions between 1857 and 1859 (see Correspondence vols. 6 and 7 and Browne 2002, pp. 63–72). His last visit to a spa was at Malvern Hills, Worcestershire, during a period of severe illness in 1863 (see Correspondence vol. 12, letter from Emma Darwin to WDFox, [6 May 1864] and n. 2).
Lane’s wife was Margaret Mary Lane. Lady Elizabeth Drysdale was his mother-in-law.
