Darwin Correspondence Project

From E. A. Darwin   12 [September 1871]1

Dear Charles

I will go to Bank and look thro’ the Box as if the £500 were purchased at a different time they may not have been placed with the others. In the list you gave me they are entered not as shares but as £4022"6"6 date 1853 I presume the sum you purchased them at—2

Looking at my mem: I see there were 5 shares purchased March 18 1856 & deposited in Tin Box so of course I shall find them all right & will send them tomorrow.3 I will make out a list at same time and avoid future mistakes.

The month and year are established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from E. A. Darwin, 10 September [1871].
The list CD sent to Erasmus has not been found, but in CD’s Investment book (Down House MS), p. 57, there is a note that on 1 May 1853 CD transferred stock worth £4022 6s. 6d. in the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway to Erasmus and Josiah Wedgwood III as trustees for Emma Darwin (see letter to E. A. Darwin, 7 September [1871] and n. 2).
Erasmus’s memorandum has not been found, but the transaction is recorded in CD’s Investment book, p. 57.

Sees mistake he made on certificates; will make list for future use.
