Dear Sir

I am much obliged by your kind & interesting letter.2 What you tell me about the interest felt in America on my own & allied views surprises & highly gratifies me. The extract from the Liberal Christian is one of finest eulogiums I ever read on men of science.3

I have real pleasure in enclosing my photograph, as a very slight token of respect & of my thankfulness for your very kind letter4

Dear Sir | yours faithfully | Charles Darwin

P.S. I have received the Index & pamphlet, which I will soon read.5 My wife has read them & been struck with them.—

I have now read, Truths for the Times, & I admire them from my inmost heart, & I believe that I agree to every word

The photograph was an 1871 profile by Oscar Rejlander (John van Wyhe, personal communication).
