I write merely to acknowledge the order for £48"4s"8d & to thank you.—
It sounds very dangerous the 5 000£ being deposited without any security, but if you like to keep this note as security, I here engage to give to you full indemnification.1

The £5000 referred to was part of a £20,000 sum made over to Robert Waring Darwin by CD and Emma Darwin; the £20,000 formed the basis of a mortgage loan to Edward Herbert, second earl of Powis (R. W. Darwin’s Investment book (Down House MS), pp. 57, 70). See Correspondence vol. 3, letter to Josiah Wedgwood III and E. A. Darwin, 25 July 1844. The other transaction has not been identified.
