My dear Charles,
Returning home, I find some Ptarmigan & two pairs of admirable Icelandic Stockings, just arrived from Iceland, presents from my friends there.2 I send you a Ptarmigan, which after due inspection, you will perhaps commit to Erasmus’s Cook,3 to be dressed for our Luncheon on Monday

Holland visited Iceland in August 1871 (Holland 1872, p. 30). The ptarmigan native to Iceland is Lagopus muta; in England it was also known as the white grouse.
Erasmus Alvey Darwin’s cook was Elizabeth Squire.
