Dear Father

I am afraid that I havnt very much chance to paying off my debts— what I meant was that it would be fairer that I should try & do it partly, by economising— I should like to pay what I can this term, so will you please send some this week— I hope I shall never give you all this trouble with my wretched folly again2

In his first letter of [before 5 December 1870] (this volume, Supplement), Francis had suggested he should pay half his bills, which totalled £50. In the event, CD paid the full amount (Correspondence vol. 18, letter to Francis Darwin, 5 December [1870]).
