My dear Sir

We have just heard from Rotterdam that the 1st. Volume of yr new work is announced there for publication on the 10th.1

Are you aware that they intend to publish Vol 1 by itself.?

We have sent them the Electros, so they can do so unless they are desired to the contrary.2

When do you think we may be able to publish the 2 Vols here?3

Cooke refers to the Dutch translation of Descent (Hartogh Heijs van Zouteveen trans. 1871–2). See letter from Hermanus Hartogh Heijs van Zouteveen, 27 November 1870, and letter to Hermanus Hartogh Heijs van Zouteveen, 30 November [1870]. The Dutch translation of Descent did not begin to appear until early 1871 (Correspondence vol. 19, letter from Hermanus Hartogh Heijs van Zouteveen, 2 March 1871).
Cooke refers to electrotypes of the illustrations to Descent (see letter from John Murray, 10 October [1870]).
Descent was published on 24 February 1871 (R. B. Freeman 1977).
