To Francis Darwin   5 December [1870]1

Down

Dec. 5th

My dear Frank

I send a cheque for £50 which will clear all the bills mentioned by you.2 From what you say in your last note, I feel sure that you will be more careful for the future & watch the money as it ouzes out. Altogether it is a rather heavy sum; but I know you & trust you as a good dear affectionate son.—

Ever yours | C. Darwin

Footnotes

The year is established by a reference in CD’s Classed account books (Down House MS) dated 5 December 1870 to a payment to Francis of £50.

Summary

Sends a cheque to clear FD’s debts. Hopes he will be more careful in the future.
