From G. H. Darwin   [18 October 1869]1

14 Arlington St

Monday Evg.

My dear Father,

I forgot to ask you to forward me the £52"10s which I shall have to give to Tatham on Thursday.2 I cannot tell until Xmas whether I can afford to pay it myself, as I don’t know what the fellowship dividend comes to yet. 52£ will make my balance rather indecently small so cd you have it put to my account before Thursday. I have called on Tatham & have been just introduced to my fellow pupils, of whom I will give my opinion of Saturday.—

Your affectionate Son | George. H. Darwin

The date is established by the entry in CD’s Classed account books on 19 October 1869 (see n. 2, below). The Monday preceding that date was 18 October.
An entry in CD’s Classed account books (Down House MS) on 19 October 1869 records a payment of £52 10s. for ‘George for Tatham’. The reference is to Charles Meaburn Tatham, with whom George was to study law.

Asks for some money for his fees.
