My dear Sir

I beg leave to acknowledge the receipt & thank you for the Bill for £420.1

If I can I will attend the Athenæum & shall have much pleasure in voting for Mr. Clowes & getting him any votes in my power.2

The payment was for the second printing of Variation. See letter from John Murray, 3 March [1868] and n. 2.
Murray had asked for CD’s support in electing William Charles Knight Clowes a member of the Athenaeum Club (see letter from John Murray, 6 March [1868] and n. 3).


Acknowledges receipt of bill for £420.

Will try to attend Athenaeum meeting to help elect Clowes’s son.
