The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from J. E. Gray, 2 March 1868 (Correspondence vol. 16).
Gray had sent CD information about canine teeth in deer (Correspondence vol. 16, letter from J. E. Gray, 2 March 1868. He mentioned that he was suffering from an inflammation of the iris.
