Footnotes

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter to John Murray, 10 April [1867].
In his letter to Murray of 10 April [1867], CD had asked Murray to have a set of stereotypes of the illustrations to Variation made for the publisher Christian Friedrich Schweizerbart for the German translation; he had enquired about the cost on behalf of the Russian translator, Vladimir Onufrievich Kovalevsky.
Murray refers to William Clowes, a London printer.
