My Dear Sir

The copy of your new Edn. addressed to Benj. D. Walsh Esq—was despatched from this in parcel—enclosed to Scribner & Co New York—on the 6th. of August last by Mr Sampson Lowe— I cannot doubt that it has reached its destination ere this. However obeying your injunction I have sent off another copy to care of Baillière—2

I am— | My Dear Sir | Yours faithfully | John Murray

Ch Darwin Esq

Footnotes

The year is established by the reference to the new edition of Origin (see n. 2, below).
CD had arranged for Murray to send an advance copy of the fourth edition of Origin to Benjamin Dann Walsh before receiving instructions from Walsh to send the book to Baillière Bros in New York (see letter from B. D. Walsh, 17 July 1866, and letter to B. D. Walsh, 20 August [1866]). Charles Scribner & Co. was a New York publishing firm. Sampson Low, Son & Marston, sellers of American books, had premises at Milton House, Ludgate Hill, London (Post Office London directory 1866). In his letter of [28 November 1866], Walsh evidently wrote that he had not received the book, but in a part of his letter that is now missing (see letter to B. D. Walsh, 24 December [1866]).
