‘9bre’: Novembre (from the Latin for ‘nine’: novem).
The booksellers and publishers Williams & Norgate specialised in foreign scientific literature. CD’s copy of Quatrefages 1865 is in the Darwin Library–Down. ‘Fig. col.’ is probably an abbreviation for ‘figures colorés’, referring to the coloured plates of the work.

From Armand de Quatrefages1   10 November 1866

Paris 10 November. 66 Dear Sir and Colleague, Messrs Williams and Norgate bksellr have been instructed to send you a copy of my History of the Annelids (fig. col.)2 If my book is too slow in reaching you, be so good as to make a request for it. This work has cost me a great deal of trouble, for I do not know of any animals that are more of a nuisance to classify than the Annelids and I have taken every care to be accurate. Receive it as a memento from your very devoted colleague who would so much like to meet you in person | De Quatrefages
