From E. A. Darwin   7 October [1866]1

Oct. 7

Dear Charles

There is some confusion about the Soup Tureen.

Some time ago Caroline inquired of Armstrong & he said that one had been sent to you & the other Susan wished to go to Carolines children—2 Caroline thinks you must have received it & forgotten about it so you had better ascertain—

The frame of the Fox Glove is in perfectly good order.

I am going to London on Wednesday & perhaps Caroline also but that is not certain—

Frank3 has fractured the ankle bone most unluckily so cannot come to the Funeral.

I am bringing away a large packet of your letters from abroad.4

Frank & Henry are the Exōrs5

The year is established by the reference to Susan Elizabeth Darwin’s funeral; see n. 2, below.
The references are to Caroline Sarah Wedgwood and Susan Elizabeth Darwin. Susan died on 3 October 1866 (see letter to J. D. Hooker, [4 October 1866] and n. 1). Armstrong has not been identified. Caroline had four daughters, one of whom died in infancy (see Freeman 1978, s.v. Josiah Wedgwood III).
Frank Parker was CD’s nephew (Freeman 1978).
For CD’s letters home while on the Beagle voyage, see Correspondence vol. 1.
Henry Parker and his brother Frank were the executors of Susan’s will (Susan Elizabeth Darwin’s will, Probate Registry, York).
