Darwin Correspondence Project

To George Bentham   [July–September 1866]1

P.S.2 If you are on Council of Linn. Soc. do consider whether it is necessary to be so much stricter about Books than the other Societies.3 Now I have six books which I must refer to; & this will take me 3 weeks to do, & will cost me paying carriage three times up to London & 3 times back;—& I wish only to glance over a short paper in each case.—

Royal allows 4 Books.—. Geolog. I think, 6 Books.4

Footnotes

The date range is established by Bentham’s reply (see letter from George Bentham, 25 September 1866 and n. 1).
The main section of the letter has not been found. In his letter to CD of 25 September 1866, Bentham refers to two memoranda from CD, one of which is this postscript.
Bentham was president of the Linnean Society. CD was a fellow of the society, and had been given liberal borrowing privileges under the previous secretary, John Joseph Bennett (see Correspondence vol. 5, letter from J. D. Hooker, [before 7 March 1855]). The current secretary and librarian was Richard Kippist.
