Darwin Correspondence Project

To Alphonse de Candolle   25 May [1839]

Mr & Mrs C. Darwin (having heard from Mme. de Sismondi of M. de Candolle’s arrival in London) request the favor of M. de Candolle’s company to dinner on Monday next May the 27th 1 at six o’clock to meet Mr Henslow Professor of Botany at Cambridge.

Mr Darwin only learnt today that Mr Henslow would be here on Monday & he therefore hopes that M. de Candolle will excuse the liberty he takes in hoping to see him at so very short a notice. 12 Upper Gower Street

Saturday May the 25th.

Footnotes

CD’s Account Book (Down House MS) records that 7s. was paid to a ‘man for waiting’, which suggests that the dinner party took place.

Summary

Invitation to dine at the Darwins’ with J. S. Henslow.
