The year is established by the address (see letter from E. A. Darwin, 24 August [1865], n. 1).
CD’s Investment book (Down House MS) index lists ‘Lancash & York’ shares under trust property of Emma Darwin. In 1856, 720 shares of East Lancashire stock were acquired, and an interest payment of £22 3s. was recorded on 4 September 1865 (see ibid., pp. 78–9). The East Lancashire and the Lancashire & Yorkshire were rival railway companies that merged on 13 August 1859 (see Bairstow 1993, p. 3).
No further correspondence on Lancashire & Yorkshire shares has been found.
