In pursuance of your directions in your letter of Feby. 23d. 1838, and in accordance with the plan of expenditure, which met (Octbr. 11th. 1837) the approval of the Lords Comm: of Her Majesty’s Treasury, I enclose the accounts for Noo 1 of Part II and Noo 1 of Part III, of the “Zoology of the Voyage of the Beagle”, which have both been published.—1 I beg leave to state, that as on the former occasion, I have superintended every expense, & the terms agreed on with the artists. I presume, if the account meets with their Lordships approval, Mrrs. Smith and Elder may as before, wait on Mr Sarjent2 at the Treasury Chambers for payment.

Preserved with this letter are two accounts from Smith, Elder & Co., dated 18 May 1838 and 4 July 1838, detailing the various costs of Mammalia, No. 1 and Birds, No. 1. The total expenses were £39 6s. 9d. and £45 3s. 2d., respectively.
