My dear Darwin

I am indeed sorry to receive such a poor account of you.2 As Gully is not to be had3—I should recommend you a trip to Ben Rhydding near Ilkley in Yorkshire. Dr MacLeod is very careful and the place is a very nice one in many ways.4 Why not go there for a fortnight before the holidays if you are so poorly—taking only Mrs Darwin5 with you?

I fear your work will kill you at last. You want cessation from Brain work more than any thing else.

As A proof I think so I will not add more than our kind regards to Mrs Darwin & yourself | Ever yours truly | W D Fox

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter to W. D. Fox, 23 May [1863].
James Manby Gully, physician and proprietor of a hydropathic establishment in Malvern, Worcestershire, was suffering from a severe illness (see letter from WDFox, [16–22 May 1863] and n. 4).
William MacLeod was the senior physician at the hydropathic establishment at Ben Rhydding, near Otley, Yorkshire (Medical directory 1863).
Emma Darwin.
