The year is established by the publication date of [Rorison] 1861; see n. 3, below.
Michel 1861. CD’s annotated copy is in the Darwin Library–CUL (see Marginalia 1: 241). CD cited the book in Variation 2: 203, 209.
The publication of The three barriers ([Rorison] 1861) was announced in Publishers’ Circular, 15 August 1861, p. 374. CD later referred to the book as ‘a theological hash of old abuse of me’ (see Correspondence vol. 9, letter to T. H. Huxley, 31 October [1861] and nn. 2 and 3).
